We will be featuring numerous foundry patterns and blueprints turned decor, as well as items from our standard product line. These beautiful hand-made patterns were constructed of mahogany or pine and were used to form the sand molds employed in the production of iron parts and components for industry by Taylor and Boggis, Ohio’s oldest foundry.

The Chrysler Block Clock is made with pecan wood salvaged from the floor of a Chrysler Stamping Plant in Twinsburg, OH. Pecan is a very dense wood, so it’s difficult to work with (cut, route, sand), but makes for a very robust and beautiful final product.

The wood came out of the floor is 32″ x 32″ x 3.5″ blocks, which have been held together since the 1950′s with glue and threaded rod. Each 32″ x 32″ x 3.5″ block yields 25 Chrysler Block Clocks. We cut those blocks on the table saw to 6″ x 32″ x 3.5 in order to get them down to width and so they will fit through out planer, which removes damage material, gives you a flat plane on the front and back of the clock and leaves you with a final thickness of 3″.

A 5/16″ hole is drilled through the front face on the that center point straight through to the back: This will be hole from which the shaft of the clock mechanism will pass. The now 6″ x 32″ x 3″ block are cut on the miter saw to 6″ tall leaving you with your final product dimensions of 6″ x 6″ x 3″. The center of the front faces are marked using a precut template and pencil.

The 6″ x 6″ x 3″ block is placed face down into a custom routing jig, which acts as guide in routing out a 2-1/4″ x 2-1/4″ x 2-1/4″ recess in the back center of the clock: this is where the clock mechanism (Made in USA) will be mounted.

The clock body is then sanded with 100 grit sandpaper.

Using a template on the clock face, sections for stamping hours on the x and y axis are marked with pencil.

Then using the sections as guides 12, 3, 6 and 9 are stamped into clock face using 1/2″ metal hand stamps using a 3lb mallet. The sharp edges of the clock are then “broken”, which means they are slightly rounded on a router table with 1/8″ round bit.

The body is then sanded with a 150 sandpaper and is sent off the finishing. The brand and salvage address is then stamped in red onto the back clock. The clock is then clear coat finished, scuff sanded with 220 grit and then sprayed with a final clear coat. Once dry, the clock mechanism is introduced from the back of the clock into the 2-1/4″ square recess and through the shaft hole to be secured on the front face with a nut and washer. A cotton twill battery pull tab is simultaneously inserted into a slot in the mechanism for ease of battery removal. The appropriate hour and minute hand are placed on the shaft at noon and fixed with a brass capping nut.

For quality control purposes the clock is set to the current time, a battery is introduced and the clock is run for 24 hours to ensure function and accuracy. If the clock has proven to be accurate; it is carefully packaged and boxed using post consumer packaging.

He was later asked to consult on the companies product design and brand. In August 2009, Mayor Frank G. Jackson convened the first Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Summit to bring together hundreds of people interested in applying the principles of sustainability to the design of the local economy. The goal: envision a 10-year campaign for “building an economic engine to empower a green city on a blue lake” by the 50th anniversary of the infamous Cuyahoga River fire.

Mission: Sustainable Cleveland 2019 is a 10-year initiative that engages people from all walks of life, working together to design and develop a thriving and resilient Cleveland region that leverages its wealth of assets to build economic, social and environmental well-being for all. Since 2009, working groups comprised of community volunteers have been engaged in a variety of sustainable economic initiatives.

Every year leading up to 2019, Cleveland will focus on one of the key areas fundamental to a sustainable economy. The SC2019 Celebration Points are designed to be accessible to all members of the community—households, neighborhoods, businesses, and institutions can all participate, either in collaboration or independently.

In keeping with our mission ”…to serve Cleveland’s progression into a sustainable 21st century…”, we designed and donated two movable displays for SC2019′s new space in Tower City. In keeping with our principles we built the displays utilizing material that we salvaged from the spaces previous tenant J.CREW, as well as, framing lumber from 3545 East 144th Street, Cleveland .

We custom designed the displays to suit the specific multi-purpose needs for the space. They were to be inlayed with cork for quick and easy pin-up space.

Historically, foundries made type. Cast-metal shops fabricated the metal type pieces used to create printing presses. As a result, foundries were some of the first places to create their own in-house presses and publications.

We are a different sort of foundry – the Foundary is a workshop for crafting your home style. House Press is our in-house publication to help you capture inspiration and translate it into a tangible reality. It’s our ode to the well-designed home, as well as the printed word.

Just as the printing press made books accessible at a relatively low price, the Foundary offers its members the necessary elements for a high-style environment at considerable savings. House Press presents findings from the Foundary – standout products, emerging designers and inspiring ideas. Here you can learn about new design trends, style movements of the past and practical ways to forge your own polished approach to home life.
